Hi, Wondering if Bill Syska (1896-1981) is the man who owned an old farm off Chadeayne Rd & Pinesbridge Rd on the Ossining/Yorktown NY border, next to the IBM T.J. Watson research center. My parents bought a 1 acre lot from him in 1956, built a house there in the '60's and lived there 50 years. It was a great neighborhood to grow up in, about 20 homes on Syska Rd and Barnes St. (My dad said Barnes was Syska's brother-in-Law). Reply to johnsommermail@gmail.com Great genealogy site you have here!
ReplyDeleteWell that's very interesting. I lived in Ossining in the 70's and have always wondered if there was a connection to Syska Rd. Bill Syska (1896-1981) who is my grandfather, could not have been this William Syska, however. He lived in New Rochelle and Mount Vernon at that time and never had the means to own land. I suspect the owner was his cousin, William A. Syska (1888-1982). William A Syska was the son of Adolph G. Syska (1863-1940) and the brother of the Adolph G. Syska (1889-1961) who founded the Syska Hennessy engineering firm. The 1940 Census has William A. living on Pinesbridge Rd. in Yorktown with his wife, Catherine Voss. They had 2 daughters, Catharine & Hilda, and a son who died young. The 1961 Obituary of his brother, Adolph, lists William's residence as Ossining, NY at the time. You can find a 1982 article about William A. Syska under the News tab on this blog. Here's a link as well. http://syskafamily.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_94.html
DeleteI recently moved into a house on Pines Bridge and can confirm it's the Bill Syska Jr. farm, I found these butter boxes in the chicken house/barn - https://jazcouk.files.wordpress.com/2021/08/syska-butter.jpg
